Surfware, Inc. Your Milling Software Solution

Some Members of the Surfware Team

Alan Diehl
Alan Diehl
CEO and Board Chairman

Alan Diehl is co-founder of Surfware and co-inventor of TrueMill®. At an early age he learned tool and die making at the family mold shop, and later, his Navy training was in electronics. Back in the 1970s, he envisioned using computers to program NC mills, and bought an early PDP-11 style computer to learn programming and test his ideas. His thirty years’ experience in engineering molds and working with customer requirements complements his intuitive insight into the art and science of machining. Alan continues his ongoing R&D work to develop the full potential of the patented TrueMill technology.

Pat PattersonPat Patterson

Robert (Pat) Patterson is a co-inventor of the patented, award-winning TrueMill technology, also known as Tool Engagement Milling. A former teacher of mathematics and computer programming, Pat began promoting secondary school computer education in 1977.

He has served as technical writer and CAM product developer for Surfware since 1995.  Pat received his M.Ed. degree in Mathematics from Eastern Washington University in 1967.

As president of Marton Consulting Inc., he provided sales, CNC programming and post processing services for clients in the aerospace, medical, plastic molding, forging and consumer products industries. During his twenty-year career, he has worked with both small and large machine shops, selling CAM software and managing technical solutions. In addition to his sales, programming and design skills, he has hands-on experience as a mold designer and mold maker.

Larry DiehlLarry Diehl
Chief Software Architect

Larry Diehl’s formal education was in Mathematics and Music, but he was using programmable calculators back in his teens to develop G-code for NC mills in the family mold shop. In the 1980s, Larry and his brother Bryan wrote a powerful APT-like program for surface modeling and machining. Larry later rewrote it for DOS with virtual memory and display-list processing to achieve true surface machining on a 286 PC with only 640k RAM. That was the first SURFCAM, and Larry’s innovations have been the hallmark of Surfware CAD/CAM systems throughout its 20-year history. Today he is system architect — and still enjoys playing guitar and perfecting sound systems.

Darrin joined Surfware over seven years ago but has been involved in the machining industry for more than twenty years. He is an expert in a variety of machines, equipment and software programs.

Bryan DiehlBryan Diehl
Chief Operations Officer

Bryan Diehl learned Fortran when he was 12 years old, and by high school was using HP programmable calculators to write G-code for NC mills at the family mold shop. He and his brother Larry developed an early CAD/CAM system for the shop’s internal use. Later, Microsoft’s burgeoning technology attracted him to Seattle where he soon became the technical liaison between Microsoft and IBM in their joint OS/2 project – still in his early 20s. He later worked on Windows NT, developing the operating system kernel, device drivers in assembly language, and C/C++. After a few years with Microsoft, Bryan rejoined the Surfware development team and wrote the 2-Axis and Lathe portions of SURFCAM.
